PHP History

PHP was created by Danish programmer Rasmus Lerdorf in 1995.The programmers called Andi Gutmans and Zeev Suraskirewrote the parser In 1997, which was  used in version PHP 3. Zend Engine, which is the interpreter of PHP was developed in 1999.

The popularity of PHP can be fathomed from the fact that according to Wikipedia data  75 percent of websites use PHPFacebook, Wikipedia, Yahoo, and Photobucket are all built in PHP. Not only that, WordPress, the most popular blogging software in the world, runs on PHP and probably accounts for half of that 35 percent. Not only this, most of the other major content management systems, such as Drupal and Joomla etc  are also built in PHP

Several web developers, particularly the new ones, are often confused with the choice of using either PHP or ASPX (ASP.NET). While many reasons have been advanced in support of one or the other, here are the top five advantages of PHP.

Low Cost

As mentioned above, PHP is free because it’s launched as open source software. Another reason for PHP’s low cost has to do with the fact that LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP) which is very popular and hence LAMP hosting cost is very low as compared to Windows hosting. On the other hand, ASPX is only free with purchase of Windows OS.

Great Support

Support for LAMP (and by extension PHP) is everywhere. Being open source thousands of developers around the globe works and contributes to make this language more and more popular. When PHP developers have problems or questions they post the questions in forums and large community is there to reply fast.On the other hand, in the case of ASP.net and JSP the support is only available at their own official. Yes, there are support outside also but not as much as PHP community.

Easy To Learn

Since PHP’s syntax matches with classic ‘C’ language which is almost taught in all colleges and universities, it’s easy to grasp for beginner developers

Its Syntax is more English like which makes this language easily understandable for even the fresher’s.

Robustness

In general, PHP is more stable than ASPX. This obviously translates to greater uptime. It is a proven technology that has been around for over a decade now. In addition to that, it is regularly updated. This has greatly increased its stability.

Editor Independent

Since PHP is editor independent, those who use it can use any of the extensive editors available. This is not the case with ASPX whose editors tend to rely on Microsoft Visual Studio for developing applications.

Speed

After introduction of PHP 7 the speed of execution of PHP has increased many folds. Even larger applications take lesser time to process than its predecessor version of PHP.
